5 Best Metal Detectors For Beach Combing

January 8, 2011 by admin

For many ordinary guys, metal detecting, gold hunting, search for coins and relics…they are more of a hobby than a passion. They are something to kill time than something to make consistent money from. HOWEVER, there’s no denying that you can always use a better and more precise metal detector that would make the whole affair even MORE fun.

Whether you are planning to go metal detecting and treasure hunting at the beach on your vacation (or anywhere else for that matter), here are the top 5…the best beach metal detectors that would make your vacation even more sizzling.

Who knows? You may even find something that’s REALLY valuable in the process!

#1: Bounty Hunter Sharp Shooter II

I grabbed one of these and, without beating around the bush, I’m going to tell you this: I’m giving the Bounty Hunter Sharp Shooter II two thumbs up! With it, I was able to unearth a gold ring, a couple of silver rings, clad, and MORE clad change and we are just getting started.

You see, this metal detector, which is meant for beginners and perhaps for using at the beach is more of a dime and a quarter magnet. I was able to dig up a child’s silver ring…and that’s located at a fresh water beach over 12 inches deep! Along with that, it can regularly find coins at eight inches and deeper.

Here’s what I did: I set the sensitivity at around 12 o clock and switched the discrimination at 10 o clock when I’m searching on moderately trashy areas. For places that are a little cleaner, I increase the sensitivity and tone the discrimination down.

When I get a high pitched tone, I go for the all metal mode. With this, I was able to determine the size of the object before I even start digging. And all I had to do is pass the coil over the target, tune in to the sound. If the tone is short, that means the object is smaller. HOWEVER, if it’s longer, that means it’s a soda pop can. Well, 90 percent of the time. I don’t bother. Shorter tones, HOWEVER, usually means it’s a small coin sized object.

When I got this all figured out, the chances of finding trash decreased and the probability of finding something valuable increased…DRAMATICALLY if I may add.

Back then, I thought you would need to spend hundreds or better yet, thousands of hard earned though to get a good metal detector. Man! I was wrong and the Bounty Hunter Sharp Shooter II proved me. If you are looking for a metal detector that’s precise, that’s fun to use, etc., you can never go wrong with the Bounty Hunter Sharp Shooter II. Now, it may NOT be able to do what the 1,400 USD models can. BUT for the price and what it can do, it’s UNBEATABLE!

#2: Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II

Before deciding which metal detector to buy, you should do a lot of research and review – checking what people have to say about the model, what it can and cannot do, and more. It’s NOT all cut and dried BUT one thing is for sure: the Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II is one of the best metal detectors you could ever lay your hands on!

It comes with features and settings that are generally found in higher priced models. It lives up to the hype and works as it’s advertised.

After reading the manual, I was able to discover several coins and other valuable stuff RIGHT at my own backyard after a couple of outings with it. Even better, it will reliably tell you what coin is being detected. HOWEVER, as with anything, this model is NOT perfect and in many times, it confuses dimes and pennies in the LCD screen.

Sensitivity wise, this is top notch! It can find and detect most coin sizes to about 6 to 8 inches deep…RELIABLY I should add. If you have checked out other metal detectors, you will surely agree that many of them are frustrating to use and simply don’t deliver. That’s NOT the case with the Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II, though. It’s easy to use as well, which makes it a pleasure to use it – whether you are a serious metal and treasure hunter or someone who just got introduced to metal detecting and want to take it up as a profitable hobby.

- The 8 inch Bounty D-Tech Search Coil is FULLY submersible.

- Ground Trac – this feature of the Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II automatically balances the machine to the soil conditions.

- Comes with 4 modes of operation – comes with an all-metal detection mode, to the Disc Notch mode that sets irons and nails to the side, as well as 2 modes has different tone outputs for different types of metal.

- The Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II’s display shows the Target ID as well as Depth Readout together with the four modes’ operation, coupled with a low battery indicator.

Niceties Included
- Easy to understand tutorial.
- Downloadable manual which is VERY comprehensive and easy to understand.
- Comes with built in speaker, headphone jack, and runs on 2 9-volt alkaline batteries.
- Best of all, beefed up with 5 year limited warranty!

#3: Bounty Hunter TK4-PL Tracker IV Metal Detector

There was a ’32 Chevy that was buried in my friend’s backyard and he figured out he wanted to find some niceties – coins, Civil War relics, rings…in short, he wants to take up metal detecting as a hobby. He wanted something that’s good enough for a newbie – precise, affordable, and a breeze to use.

As someone in the know, I recommended the Bounty Hunter TK4-PL Tracker IV Metal Detector and started to guide him through the ins and outs of metal detecting. It took us only 15 minutes to read the manual, and in a moment’s notice, we are out in search for ‘treasure’.

Well, I’m happy to tell you that the Bounty Hunter TK4-PL Tracker IV Metal Detector did NOT disappoint my friend and I. We were able to pick up a couple of coins, a golden ring, and other niceties. HOWEVER, as expected, we also encountered rubbish along the way – nails, pop soda cans, etc. BUT all in all, my friend did well for a total newcomer in metal detecting.

The Manual: You simply have to check it out as it will give you an idea of how different objects – coins, nails, cans, gold, etc. would respond to the detection modes.

Another VALUABLE Tip: Use a headphone this is highly recommended! Thanks to this, we were able to find beer cans, shotgun shells, nails, and on our second attempt, we found a silver ring. Finally, we have found something valuable.

Bounty Hunter TK4-PL Tracker IV Metal Detector – over all, the tower appears to be of great construction and value. I’m sure there are other better detectors out there (which is MORE expensive by the way) BUT I don’t think there is any model that is easier to use. It’s the metal detector of choice especially for newcomers.

#4: Garrett GTI 2500

Right here, we have another top notch metal detector – performs really well, comes with USEFUL bells and whistles (nah, it’s NOT like other add-ons that do really nothing at all), and easy to use even for beginners BUT powerful enough for serious metal detection enthusiasts.

Thanks to the Garrett GTI 2500’s elimination control, you can easily set the detector to focus and detect only specific type of metals and ignore typical rubbish. This is excellent if you are hunting for treasure in places with A LOT of trash, which describes my backyard.

Along with that, the control panel, which is located conveniently situated above the cushioned handgrip, comes with an impressive LCD screen. This shows the depth, tentative identity size, as well as the location of the items. PLUS, the screen is backlit, which makes it easy to use even after the dark. With instructional videos that teach you how to use it properly, getting the most of the Garrett GTI 2500 is a piece of cake!

Garrett GTI 2500 Search Modes?1. Non Motion Search Mode – This is for deep seeking metal together with Visual Target ID as well as Target Imaging.

2. Motion Search – When it comes for searching for jewelry, relics, zero, and custom discrimination (coupled with Visual Target ID and Target Imaging), this is the search mode to go for.

3. Imaging Or Pinpoint Search Mode – This is the non motion detection and search mode together with precise Visual Target Imaging.

#5: Garrett GTI 1500

Before anything else, I got to be honest, I wasn’t too excited to try the Garrett GTI 1500 metal detector. Why? Simple – it’s way too affordable. And with that, I was under the impression that this model was nothing BUT a cheapo – an overpriced plastic and cheapo metal detector which can’t even tell the difference from something valuable (coins, silver, etc.) from rubbish (iron, nails, etc.)

BUT then, my metal detecting-friend loves it and brags about it, so I decided to check it out without knowing if it would work out well. When I get to see it finally and laid my hands on it, I was surprised…PLEASANTLY surprised. It definitely didn’t look like a cheapo – not by a long shot. And when I carried it, it’s heavier than the cheapo metal detectors that I have once used (why? Because it’s NOT a cheapo!). I was in for a treat.

I was also very surprised at how tight the discrimination is! It’s so tight that I could hardly hear the detector at all when it’s detecting rubbish. After a couple of outings with this marvelous piece of metal detector, I was WOWed. I was finding square nails at over .
square nails at over 10 inches.

WARNING: When it comes to silver coins, you better switch that headphone off. Why? Man! It will LITERALLY blast your ears off. That’s for real I would also recommend that you try it out on those over hunted site. Why? With the Garrett GTI 1500, you would always find something under the ground. I have done that more than a couple of times with the Garrett GTI 1500 metal detector.

I’m giving this metal detector from Garrett 2 thumbs up! The guys who created it definitely know their thing. Next time I need a metal detector, I’m going to take a look at the creations of Garrett. I’m sure it won’t disappoint.

HIGHLY recommended!
